These images which seem like pictorial still lifes were created using found footage from social media.

The pictures of draped bedding were all posted in online swap groups where users connect in order to give away their cleared-out things. The photographs were quickly shot with a mobile phone rather than taken with the intention to be well composed or artistic.

The work points out ambiguities in terms of ownership and authorship both in the context of a throwaway society as well as the digital age.

This interactive installation was designed for the church of Krewerd and is inspired by the hagioscopes, small windows on the side of the church that gave sight on the altar.

Visitors were invited to follow a small ritual; then a acrylic glass window was handed over to them. When the windows were put in a wooden holder at the end of the aisle, a projection became visible.

The projection of branches and plants moving in the wind formed a direct link to the outside surroundings of the church, combining the inside and the outside world.

This installation was designed for Festival terug naar het begin which took place in june 2021 on several locations in the region Eemsdelta.

The interactive artwork REflags consists of 10 flag-sized mirrors installed on 5 meter high flagpoles which are placed in a line in public space. The installation was designed for the Grote Markt, the central and highly frequented location in Groningen. The concept is to refer to the diverse and busy environment of the market square. The installation adds up to this and creates an even more fragmented and mixed-up visual impression. People can turn the flagpoles via handlebars which changes the position of the mirrors. By doing so, they can influence the reflected image in the mirror and thus the appearence of the artwork. The viewers are invited to play and interact with each other and the installation itself.

 

This installation was presented during art manifestation MARKER, an event which was initiated by CBK Groningen en NP3 and took place in june 2018.

In this world there are phenomena for which I know no words. And sentiments whose essence I cannot describe.

Sometimes I am searching without knowing what I am searching for.

I find universal images. Details of a world we are familiar with, but sometimes unable to pinpoint. I try to depict what often stays unnoticed in the hectic routine of everyday life. I am fascinated by what hides in the shadows, both literally and figuratively. Those arcane things which stay hidden to most of us, because light falls upon them only for a fraction of a second – or not at all. Like an alchemist, I sift through the undefined for hidden treasures. Like a poet whose voice is imagery I seek for the echoes of the obvious and for the magical in the ordinary.

A repetitive, minimalistic moving image is projected in a dark space. The low-light recordings of natural elements in movement remind us of static noise of a television that lost signal. Like several of my works, this installation is a poetic exploration of the recognizability of an image.
I want to put our visual perception on the proof. The tranquil imagery feels somehow familiar to us, at the same time we cannot pinpoint the space in which it is recorded or put the scenery in a context. A sound of distant people shouting and traffic noise is in contrast with the serene and balanced natural imagery. This translates to a personal feeling of being disconnected and lost while searching for balance and consistency in our ever-changing surroundings

Venues passed-by in a nocturnal search. Parts of them are highlighted, as if hit accidentally by a lonely light travelling through the night. Essentially, this series is a collection of atmospheric images of ordinary sites and situations. It is our mind that sees the obscure lurking beneath the surface. This series came together of works taken in the framework of my series Nachtansichten.

In this series of night photographs I focused on details of buildings and other architectural elements in the city. I searched for geometrical figures and patterns which emerge from the interplay of light and shadow. Reduced to simple and graphical shapes, the documented places seem taken out of their surroundings. They lose their recognisability and are virtually reduced to elementary building blocks of the urban environment.

When darkness falls in, we become aware of our dependence on light. To orient ourselves we light up places in our environment with the use of artificial lighting. By this, certain locations become the focus of attention at nighttime. Neon lights, street lamps and spotlights dissolve the places they illuminate from the endless darkness which surrounds them. Artificial light sources, serving as guidance or for decorative purposes, put certain parts of the city on focus, may it be planned or unintended. With this ongoing photo series I want to capture the special, often mysterious character ordinary places can have at night.

Floating shapes

Floating shapes is a video artwork in which minimalistic video recordings were put together to create the visual experience of constant flowing. Using the low key technique, the focus is laid on the structure of different materials and surfaces in a poetic way. Starting point for this piece was the fascination for light effects that can be seen in nature, for instance when sunbeams fall on a wall or are reflected on the surface of water. These so-called ‘found animations’ were mingled with staged scenes in which one can recognize the silhouettes of persons.  The video fragments could be short film scenes or fractions of our memory, inviting the viewer to make up his own story.

Bright, naturally moving forms flow downwards a vertical projection screen. Sometimes the light is only visible for a fraction of a second and looks like thunderbolts. The abstract visuals are accompanied with an alienated mechanical sound. Although the projected imagery is reduced to a minimum of visual information, one can still recognize video recordings of drops of a fluid running down a surface. Luminous flux questions our perception of forms and surfaces. Besides, it is a visual study of the physicality of light and the way it behaves in space.
